Answer: The gospel is the “good news” or message preached by Jesus Christ, delivered to His appointed apostles and commissioned to be preached to all the world. Sadly, most professing Christians today have held on to just one part of the good news, and have thus lost most of the Truth Jesus Christ came preaching.
The heart of the gospel message is that Christ will return to establish the Kingdom of God here on the earth. Regrettably, most professing Christians have forgotten Christ’s actual message, and have invented an incomplete “message about the Messenger.”
A few go to the opposite extreme and would have you believe that preaching about the coming Kingdom of God does not include preaching about its King, Jesus Christ. Yet we know that you cannot have a Kingdom without a King—and it is Jesus Christ who died, sinless, and will return to be that King. He will rule over a literal Kingdom. A Kingdom has a king, a territory, laws and subjects. It is not some abstract feeling in the heart. The Kingdom of God will extend to all the earth, ruled by Christ the King, administered under God’s law, ruling over all who are alive during the Millennium and beyond.
Yet Christ did not just want to spread “head knowledge” about the coming Kingdom. His message was plain: “Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). What does it mean to repent? It means to turn away from the ways of mankind’s kingdoms, and to turn toward the ways of God’s Kingdom.
That is the task of true Christians: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). The gospel of the Kingdom of God reveals the promise of a glorious future for mankind, but it also reveals a hope for Christians today, who can experience in their lives a foretaste of what the whole world will soon know. Now, that is good news!
